Core Principles of SPHE

Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE)

At Junior Cycle students complete the SPHE short course as part of the school’s Wellbeing programme. Students have a dedicated space and time to learn about themselves, caring for themselves and others and making informed decisions for their health and wellbeing. 

There are four strands, each one focusing on learning in different but related areas of social, personal and health education: Who am I, Minding myself and others, Team up, and My mental health. 

Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) is included in the SPHE curriculum and is also included as a module in Senior Cycle. The topics covered are:

  • Friendship
  • Changes at Adolescence
  • The Reproductive System
  • Images of Male and Female
  • Respecting myself and others
  • From Conception to birth
  • Peer pressure
  • Managing Relationships
  • Recognising and Expressing Feelings and Emotions
  • Body Image
  • Relationships
  • Respect Rights Responsibilities
  • Conflict

Wellbeing in Junior Cycle is about young people feeling confident, happy, healthy and connected.   The short course in SPHE provides learning opportunities which will help to develop these attributes thereby contributing significantly to the school’s wellbeing programme in junior cycle.

Aim

This short course aims to develop students’ positive sense of themselves and their physical, social, emotional and spiritual health and wellbeing. It also aims to build the capacity of young people to develop and maintain healthy relationships
